Alder Creek Rods and Publishing
There are few people in the bamboo rod making world who have given back to the craft as much as Ron Barch has. Under Ron's tutelage, both Kirk and I, learned to make our first bamboo fly rods. Not only does Ron make beautiful fly rods, but he facilitates some wonderful pieces of writing as well. He is the editor and publisher of The Planing Form, a monthly newsletter for rod builders. He has also published several books for Kathy Scott, a prolific writer from Maine. Every winter when the mercury plunges enough to lock up the guides on the spey rod, I pull out Kathy's Headwaters Fall as Snow and go on a jaunt with her and the dogs in the Pine Tree state.
One of Ron's greatest gifts to the rod building community is the compilation of two books that are "must haves" for the rod builder. The Best of the Planing Form I and II are rarely ever closed on my bench. If you would like to see what else he has to offer check out his website http://www.aldercreekpublishing.com/.
Needless to say, we can honestly say that had it not been for his patience and guidance (as well as his wife's) we wouldn't have been able to start Karma Kane Rods.
What started out as a relationship based on an educational benefit has turned into one based on a friendship that has transcended our age difference. Over the past years, we have shared many times on and off the water. From shaving bamboo to sipping a good bourbon, Ron is one that is always willing to share a tip or just a good story. We just can't thank Ron enough for his continuing support for the craft!

Some of our favorites...
Outfitters North Guide Service: Jeff Hubbard is a great guide and really knows his stuff. He is definitely a swinger (in the fishing world, this is a good thing)! He guides several rivers, but I would have to say that nobody knows the Pere Marquette as well as he does. If you are looking for someone to give you the best opportunity to get into some Michigan's most beautiful creatures, he is your guy!

Classic rods and classic flies go together like peanut butter and jelly, mashed potatoes and gravy, or hexagenia limbata and big trout. That is why we like this book so much.....it just creates more good Karma between the proximal and distal ends of the fly fishing process. In addition to being great authors and illustrators, Jon Osborn and Joe Van Faasen are good friends and fantastic fisherman. This book is a collection of drawings and the history behind 16 flies created by Michigan tiers. Each of these flies have initially proven their worth within the banks of Michigan rivers and lakes and subsequently reached legendary proportions outside of our state lines. Whether you live in Michigan or not, this is a book that belongs on every fly fisherman's library shelf. Treat yourself to a copy today. Visit www.classicmichiganflies.com for more info on the book and enjoy Jon and Joe's cool website.
